A prosperous economy

As one of Europe's busiest rivers, the Scheldt plays a prominent economic role in (international) shipping, the local economy and agriculture. Our work takes this into account so that water safety, nature and the economy can all develop alongside each other.

Boost for the economy

The Scheldt is an important shipping route, allowing tonnes of goods in and out of the ports of Antwerp, Vlissingen, Terneuzen, Ghent and Brussels. Many businesses are based in those ports and on the riverbanks. Shipping and the associated economic development are therefore an integral part of the Sigma Plan.

Thriving hospitality businesses and leisure activities

Beer gardens and restaurants along the towpaths, bicycle rental companies, boat trips ... The hospitality and service industries throughout the Scheldt Valley (including its tributaries) are all benefiting from what the Flemish tidal rivers have to offer. Local associations, local councils and farmers are also contributing to tourism projects. One example is the historic colliery site near Mirabrug in the Durme Valley.

Solutions for farmers

Agricultural land is being lost in some Sigma Plan areas. That is why the Flemish Government has worked with agricultural experts to develop a flanking policy for agriculture. These measures should mitigate the Sigma Plan's impact on farmers. In other areas, agriculture does remain possible, or farmers are helping us to convert or manage the area.
